Domestic, commercial and industrial wastewater, sewage, and to a lesser extent storm water contain chemicals, biological contaminants, suspended solids and dissolved gases that must be removed before the water can be re-used or discharged into a receiving environment such as the sea, a river, a lake or a canal.
