Raw natural gas from production wellheads contains a wide range of contaminants that must be removed before the natural gas can be used by consumers. This program describes the unit operations required to produce a clean product for export. The blue natural gas process minimizes the carbon dioxide emissions of its gray predecessor.

After removal of hydrocarbon liquids, water and solids by gravity settling, the raw natural gas is passed to an Amine Absorption and Regeneration Unit for removal of sulfur-bearing contaminants. Liquid hydrocarbons are stabilized before being exported. Produced water and sediment are passed to an off-plot facility for separation and recovery.
Sulfur compounds are removed from the raw natural gas by absorption into an amine solution. The rich amine is then regenerated and the acid gas produced is passed to a Sulfur Recovery & Tail Gas Treating Unit. The sweetened natural gas is returned to the Gas Train.
Acid gas from upstream amine treating is combusted and catalytically converted into elemental sulfur, which is condensed and exported in liquid form. Traces of unconverted sulfur compounds are incinerated in a hydrogen-fired Thermal Oxidizer.
Sweetened natural gas is compressed, glycol-scrubbed to remove traces of liquid hydrocarbons, passed through dew point control and mercury adsorption before entering a second compression stage that raises it up to pipeline pressure. The natural gas product passes through custodial transfer before being exported.
